My Child Wears Glasses

I have gotten so many questions about how I knew my son needed glasses so I thought I would just do a blog post about it in case you find yourself (or someone you know) in the same boat.

When Paxton was 18 months old he was still in daycare. He was getting sick what seemed like EVERY week. We could not keep that child well. In November of 2019 he got RSV. That was the scariest moment of my life so far. I literally slept on the floor of his room just to listen to him breathing. As soon as he was better he had to go get his 18 month vaccines. That next day after his vaccines I started to notice his eyes going crossed. One eye literally fell to the center. I FREAKED out. And of course, googled it. My mother, the conspiracy theorist, told me it was probably the vaccines that caused his eyes to go crossed and “oh my goodness he probably has a neurological disorder now!” So yes, me being the vulnerable mother with a CROSS EYED BABY immediately made an appointment to see a specialist.

My sweet parents had to take him to the opthamologist because I had to work. And after dilating Paxton’s eyes the doctor knew within 30 seconds what the problem was. He was able to measure Paxton’s eye and (I won’t go into specifics because I am not a scientist and truthfully I forgot) but BASICALLY he is severely nearsighted. Poor guy couldn’t see a dang thing for 18 months of his life. My parents asked the doctor why his eye went crossed after the vaccines and he said - to sum it up - Paxton was so tired after fighting the RSV that the flu shot just made that eye muscle so tired it pretty much just gave up trying to focus so hard. So, the eye went crossed.

If you see my post on “My child has a speech delay” you will find some feelings I had about having a child that was different. When I found out Paxton needed glasses I had a lot of those similar feelings. I cried. A lot. I did not want him to feel different. I didn’t want him to have to worry about wearing glasses, and I hated that I wasn’t going to see his precious face without them. I was so sad for about a week. Until his glasses came in.

Once I put those glasses on Paxton I saw his sweet face just LIGHT up at the world around him. Oh my goodness. I melted. God’s perfect timing of the RSV and the flu shot combined. A combination I loathed. Turned out to be such a blessing. My baby boy can see. His personality just got 10x brighter. You could tell he was 10x happier. I am so thankful we figured it out early.

So if you think your child may need glasses go get checked! Trust your instincts! And do not be sad. You do not even know how many compliments my little buddy gets on these bad boys.

His glasses are the tomato brand for children. I love how stylish they are! And they are pretty much indestructible. He never complains about them so I assume he is comfortable :)

With love,

Megan
